If when E. F. Hutton talks, people listen. When God speaks, the world responds. THE WORD OF GOD IS DIFFERENT from any other spoken or written word. God promises us that His Word is different, and we must see it differently as well! When God speaks, things happen. Atoms and molecules snap into place, and the Bible has much to say about the spoken Word.The power of the tongue is real. Proverbs 18:21 says, “The tongue has the power of life and death,” In James 3:5, the Bible says, “the tongue is a small part of the body, but it makes great boasts.” The power of the tongue is real. Do we use it to encourage or tear down? The Bible tells us in I Thess. 5:11-12, “encourage one another and build each other up.” If our words have power, think of how much more powerful God’s words have!
“In the beginning,” the opening statement in John’s gospel echoes the opening words of Genesis. As God was in the beginning before the creation of the world, so was the Word.
John 1:1-2 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was with God in the beginning. All things were created through Him not one thing was created that has not been created.”
The “Word was with God” being the second statement means that the Word was with God in the beginning. The third statement and the Word was God, the original language ‘kai theos ēn ho logos’ means that a relationship existed between the Word and God (being ‘with God’ and being ‘close to the Father’s heart’). So, God the Father and Jesus the Word are tight.
“God Spoke” as recorded in Genesis and things came into being. God Spoke and there became light, God spoke, and there became land, God spoke, and it came into being. “God spoke the Word!” Jesus was the Word, and along with the Holy Spirit, they were the active agents in creating the world. Jesus, the Word went forth with the Holy Spirit and made the heavens and the earth. At the spoken Word of the Father, the universe came into being. All three parts of the trinity are actively involved when God speaks. There is power in the Word of God. It is unlike any other Word.
Some of our childhood words have roots in Hebrew and Aramaic. Do you remember the word ‘abracadabra’ when you were a little kid at a magic show? The Hebrew word ‘ab’ means Father, ‘ben’ means son, and ‘ruach hakodish’ means Holy Spirit. The Aramaic word ‘avra kadavra,’ actually means, ‘it will be created in my words.’ God is not a magic genie in the sky that grants our wishes when we speak. But there is power in praying the scripture and we need to recognize that praying the Word of God can be powerful. The words that we speak have an influence over others and even our our hearts. We can be critical or encourage; we can judge or offer sympathy.
